Calhan Hale The Things I Heard Were True
April - May 2021
Calhan Hale is an Austin-based artist with a focus on oil and acrylic painting.
Hale uses painting as a way of exploring how different parts of our experience impact how we think about ourselves, where we’re from, and where we are currently, acknowledging that these components of our identity and our relationship to them are dynamic. Hale uses painting to create spaces where these often contrasting influences from both the past and present can coexist.
Her recent paintings re-examine both her Texas upbringing and her experience as a digital native. She reflects on her own lived experience in Texas and stories that have been handed down from generations of her family before her, alongside more graphic elements that come from the influence of time spent engaging in digital interfaces.
Hale graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a double major in advertising and studio art.
