Jesus Treviño No Estas En Tu Rancho

May 2022

No Estas En Tu Rancho is an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Jesus Trevino who works both in Austin and Brownsville, Texas. His practice is developed from personal experience growing up on the U.S./Mexico borderlands and addresses the impact of loss due to an unnatural boundary. He’s interested in the land’s capacity to hold traces of unresolved tensions when thinking about histories of erasure, movement, and displacement of people, and how that shapes his identity, which continues to shift, fade, and reassemble.

The title of this exhibition can roughly be translated to “You’re Not in Your Home.” It can connote affection, the rural history of South Texas/ Northern Mexico, and in the context of this exhibition, it refers to making work during Trevino’s time away from home, in pursuit of an MFA. Reflecting on his relationship to his family history while also trying to navigate the unstable grounds produced by Americanization, this group of work contains everyday images referenced from personal photos that are then subtly agitated as if affected by the emotional residue held within the land.

Jesus graduates from the University of Texas MFA painting program in May 2022. He has been included in group shows at Martha's and has been featured in New American Paintings.
