Payton McGowen Metamorphosis

March 2022

Martha’s is pleased to announce Payton McGowen’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. Metamorphosis focuses heavily on McGowen’s colored pencil drawings. These soft-textured works feature her signature figures frolicking, lounging and getting ready for spring. As usual in McGowen’s work, her figures exist in a world where clothes do not. A free and natural world where societal norms do not exist and the ever-spinning capitalistic wheel stands still. It’s a daydream filled with relaxation. One where McGowen is the main character. One where life is slow. No errands. No lists. No schedules. It’s a simple world filled with a content stillness. A world where you can sleep with flowers and live full time in your own personal utopia.
