Calhan Hale

Calhan Hale’s recent work examines how expectations impact identity, (self) image, and meaning making. The artists’s Texas origins form an important biographical subtext. Hale’s works explores how family stories, cultural myths, and hyperbole inform subconscious expectations for the moments of our lives. Within the work, contrasting influences can tangibly coexist. The dissonance between expectations and reality and the subjectivity of storytelling are acknowledged with self- awareness on the part of the artist. Through her recent paintings, Hale recognizes her own inevitable participation in the cycle of cultural myth-making as a painter, while also amplifying the ordinary.
