Siena Smith Always Moving
January 2021
Martha’s Contemporary is pleased to present “Always Moving”, Siena Smith’s first exhibition with the gallery. The work is a dance of figures moving through the world. The choreography used varies from slow twirls of jacquard looms to quick-footed gesture paintings. To create her hand-woven pieces, Smith uses a mesh of a computer interface and her own hands to weave mellifluous and maze-like artworks. Smith methodically hand passes yarn through a machine while a digital loom synchronistically dictates the pattern she has previously input. The artistic process connects two-dimensional human figure patterns with the three-dimensional interactive processes of weaving in order to create textured narratives.
